I clearly remember the day I saw my 2nd grade teacher at the grocery store. She was wearing shorts and Dr. Scholl sandals (it was the late 70s/early 80s after all). She was pushing a cart filled with foods that real people eat and carrying a fun purse that in no way resembled the bulky teacher tote that I was used to her lugging around. I was dumbfounded. Later that summer I spotted her at the mall. How could this be? Clearly, she LIVED at school. At the very least I assumed she wore long skirts and high-heeled shoes everyday.
There is a fun book titled, "Miss Malarkey Doesn't Live in Room 10." It is written by Judy Finchler. The narrator is convinced that his teacher lives at school, plays in the gym, and sleeps in bunk beds in the teachers' room with all the other teachers. After she moves into his neighborhood, he is amazed to discover she is an actual person and even takes out her own garbage.
I feel it is important to let my students see me as a real person with real interests. Of course this isn't hard since a good percentage of them live within "trick or treating" distance. ;) So in the spirit of one of my favorite books, here is a glimpse into my life outside of the classroom.
